Vocalists of all skill levels can enjoy this course. Reading music is not necessary as this is an organic experience utilizing the tools that the original creators used at the root…feeling! Practice “coloring” your favorite tunes with as little or as much embellishment as makes you happy. A simple “ooh” with the right inflection and feel can turn a blandly delivered lyric into a bold statement. Let’s explore together the endless possibilities for vocal coloring in this genre!
Instructor Bio
Doris Fields whose stage name is Lady D is also known as “W. Va’s First Lady of Soul.” She is a singer/songwriter/ actress and playwright as well as being active in other artistic talents that she vigorously pursues. She is best known for her blues vocals but has five cds to her credit that cover her original music as well as jazz, R&B, reggae and soul.
Her one-woman show, “The Lady and the Empress” combines her original script with the music of blues legend Bessie Smith. She performs extensively with her band, MI$$ION as well as making featured appearances with many artists from the blues and jazz world. She currently resides in Beckley, WV and is a West Virginia native.
