Zero to Hero: Stained Glass with Stellathena Gregory

Students will learn every step necessary to produce their very own projects made with their own hands. All glass, tools, and supplies will be provided for student use. The following projects will be covering in this class:

DAY 1: “Straight Cuts” Make a 9-Square Quilt Pattern. It is the absolute easiest project to make in stained glass. This class introduces students to safety precautions and equipment required. Students will learn every skill necessary to complete a Nine Square Quilt Pattern suncatcher using the Tiffany technique developed by Comfrey Tiffany in the 19th Century. Students will take home a 6”x6” suncatcher made with their own hands. They will cut straight pieces of glass to specific dimensions, grind, foil, flux and solder, clean, patina and hang their project.

DAY 2: “Inside/Outside curves” Make a dove suncatcher. Students are instructed in the skills needed to cut curves in glass to produce a 12 piece dove approximately 6″x8”. They will use pattern pieces and layout pattern to cut, grind, foil, flux and solder, clean, patina and hang their project.

DAY 3: 3-D project “Make a Box With a Hinged Lid” Prerequisites are the first two sessions. Students will produce an assigned box pattern. They will learn the structural integrity needed to produce a small ring box approximately 2”x2”x2”. They will grind, foil, flux and solder, chain, embellish, clean, and patina a ring box.

DAY 4: 3-D “Make a Kaleidoscope” Prerequisites are the first three lessons. Students will learn to cut glass and work with surface-mirror to construct a triangular prism Kaleidoscope with propeller.

At the end of classes Interested students may place orders for materials and equipment to be mailed to their address.

Students need to bring gloves appropriate to handle sharp and very hot objects, wear clothes that cover legs, and wear closed toe shoes with good soles, safety goggles, head covering (such as a ball cap or scarf), and a can-do attitude. They will receive a resource list and a class outline and develop the knowledge and skills to complete 4 assigned projects.

There will be a $100 materials fee added to your total when you register for this class. Students must be at least 18 years old to register for this class.

About the Instructor 

Stellathena Vartheyanyos Gregory is a native and life-long resident of Braxton County WV. Her art and her passion is stained glass art in the Tiffany technique using West Virginia made glass from Wissmach Glass in Paden City. She has been doing this art for more than 22 years. Her work has appeared in juried art and craft venues such as Tamarack the Best of West Virginia, Augusta Festival in Elkins WV and many others. She does custom work. She makes stained glass panels, doorway transoms, interior sliding barn door murals in glass or paint,3-D pieces such as terrariums, kaleidoscopes, boxes and lamps (including Turkish lamps), Christmas villages and more. Her motto is: I do windows and much more. You dream it. I can do it in stained glass. She has a masters degree in Deaf Education. She recently retired from teaching after 32 years. She now teaches her craft in her studio in Braxton County WV and through Market on Main in Bridgeport, WV. Her classes take students from zero to hero in stained glass.
