The Augusta Heritage Center began a series of monthly presentations in four elementary schools in Randolph County in September 2022 supported by Chorus America, an organization which aims to strengthen singing communities with the advocacy, connections, and resources they need to be a vital part of society. The presentations have featured a diverse group of musicians; Suzannah Park from Asheville, North Carolina who taught Appalachian traditional songs as well as clogging steps, Sandra Canizares Santos, originally from Cuba who taught traditional songs and games from the island country, Dr. Kathy Bullock from Berea, Kentucky who taught spirituals and gospel music, and the final presenter Nadia Tarnawsky, an Ukranian-American who taught traditional song and dance. Miss Tarnawsky walked the kids through a few verses sung in Ukrainian followed by a sing-along of a song traditionally believed to help bring an end to Winter and the beginning of Spring. Following the sing-along, the children learned a little bit about Ukrainian folk dancing. The students were then broken into two different groups to form two circles with everyone holding hands and dancing. It was clear at each school that the children enjoyed the performances and were quite inquisitive when given the chance to ask questions of Miss Tarnawsky. The current series of presentations is set to conclude in an April 2023 event at Davis and Elkins College with children from each school having the option to attend with up to two parents or trusted adults to celebrate the series. The event will include a sampling of food from the different countries and regions of the United States the artists represented as well as singing songs that were taught throughout the series.
