Project description: The Milnes Collection contains audio-visual recordings made and collected by the Augusta Heritage Center’s former Folk Arts Coordinator, Gerald Milnes. Throughout his career with Augusta, Milnes conducted field work to amass a large collection of photographs, oral histories, music, and event recordings. Dayton Howes with siblings

Dayton Howes holding fiddle and bow, stands with his siblings for the photo. Pictured left to right are Loretta (Howes) Gillum, Junior (Clyde) Howes, Delmar Howes, and Dayton Howes. According to Dayton’s granddaughter, Missy (Howes) Daugherty, Dayton retired from the air force in 1971 and came back to Upshur County, WV where he built his house and workshop, and started making and repairing fiddles. It would take him a year to make one fiddle, and in his career he made 23 fiddles.
