Scheitholt from Jim Costa’s collection

Scheitholt owned by Jim Costa. This instrument features a slight trapezoid-shaped body with straight sides, scrollwork at the head, six wooden tuning pegs, carved frets, and four cherry-shaped sound holes. The scheitholt, a possible predecessor to Appalachian dulcimers, is a type of German zither. The instruments usually exceed 42 inches in length. Photograph by Gerry Milnes, Feb 1989.
