Cajun Twin Fiddling with Kevin Wimmer and Peter Schwarz

Fiddle | Kevin Wimmer and Peter Schwarz | Intermediate/Advanced | Period 2 | Week 1 (July 6-10, 2026)

There’s nothing more beautiful than the sound of two Cajun fiddles together. These are the duets that sustained the traditions of the Acadiens through centuries of hardship, fulfilled the community’s desire for dance rhythms, and adapted and evolved with the influences of Louisiana’s rich musical diversity, especially from the Creoles of African descent. Dewey Balfa called the perfect combination of four notes from two fiddles le bourdon (an old French term for bumblebee) to explain this vibration of tones. Kevin and Peter will start with an exploration of some of the great two-fiddle techniques that pre-date the impacts of the accordion, guitar and electrification, with songs from duos such as Denis McGee and Ernest Frugé. We will also provide tools for learning more modern Cajun twinning, strategies to simplify lead melodies and find the right harmonies as well as explore interesting counter-melodies. Finally, if everyone is game, we can even talk about 3 fiddles and how to stack the parts, and provide sonic space for each fiddle.
