Craft | Katherine Fahey | All Levels | Evening Mini-Class | Week 2 (July 15-18, 2024)
During this workshop, you will learn how to make your own Matchbox crankie*. You can design a scroll or use one provided for you. You will learn how to storyboard a crankie and to plan a scroll. We will decorate crankie boxes with a proscenium**. These little crankies make great gifts or even plans for future larger crankies!
*A crankie (also written cranky), moving drop, or moving panorama is a scroll of artwork in a box, often illustrating a story or song. The ream of paper or fabric rolled around 2 posts, which is then pulled across the front, much like film in an old camera.
**A proscenium is the wall containing the arch that frames the stage. We will have some sharp tools in the classroom, but we can help those who don’t feel comfortable using them.
Mini-classes are held Monday through Thursday the week of programming from 6:00-7:15pm. They may be taken in addition to daytime classes or on their own. Cost is $75. This class will have a $5 materials fee for your first crankie kit. More kits available to purchase directly from the instructor.
About the Instructor
Katherine Fahey is storyteller, papercut artist, and puppeteer. She mainly make crankies, a form of visual art performance that involves a box containing a scroll of artwork. The scroll is attached to rods with cranks at the top. As the cranks are turned the scroll moves across the front of the box, where the viewer can see the artwork.
