Teen Augusta (STEAM edition!) with Emily Prentice

Emily Prentice | All Levels | All-Day | Week 3 (July 20-25, 2025)

At Teen Augusta (STEAM edition!), teens aged 12-16 will dive into a world of visual arts, dance, and crafts, creating unique artworks and engaging in hands-on experiences. The theme of this week is STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Throughout the week, each day’s projects will blend fun science and math concepts with traditional art forms like quilting, drawing, watercolor painting, natural dyes, and color theory. Emily Prentice will lead the program, with exciting guest workshops each day hosted by visiting STEAM educators who specialize in areas like botanical painting, astronomy, chemistry, robotics, and quilting.

Guest instructors for our STEAM workshops:

Jerod Caligiuri (Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Davis & Elkins College): Jerod will teach us about cool topics in mathematics and physics, including acoustics, geometry and tessellations. He will also guide an evening trip to the Davis & Elkins College space observatory to teach basic skills regarding telescope use and recognition of objects in space.

Chuck Trautwein (Robotics teacher, Garrett County Schools) — Chuck will teach us about the Fibonacci sequence and its applications in nature, art and design.

Kathryn Prentice (sewing teacher, Elkins Sewing Center) — Kathryn will teach us how to sew quilt squares, which will integrate the geometry lessons taught by Jerod Caligiuri.

Rosalie Haizlett (illustrator, author of “Tiny Worlds”) — Rosalie will teach us about botanical illustration using watercolor and pen & ink. These workshops will cover the science topics of plant biology and biodiversity in the Monongahela National Forest as well as artistic topics of watercolor technique.

Nevada Tribble (B.A. Art, Shepherd University) — Nevada will teach us about cyanotype printing. The workshop will cover the chemical processes that make cyanotype work, the historical uses of the technique, and the artistic applications (making our own bags and t-shirts!)

Scholarships are available on a rolling basis. Apply at the link below.

About the Instructor

Emily Prentice is an artist and arts educator living in Elkins, WV. She graduated with degrees in English and Fine Arts from Davis & Elkins College in 2016, and has been merging those two forms ever since. While interested in every kind of making, she spends most of her time drawing, making zines, and playing with fibers; she says that she loves making art that shares information, builds community, and helps all people realize their creative potential. Since starting her work as an artist she has become passionate about educating other artists, too, having taught zine- and quilt-making across Appalachia and now teaches classes in creative play online.
