Crafting a Song Cycle with Abigail Washburn

Singing | Abigail Washburn | All Levels | Period 3 | Week 2 (July 14-19, 2024)

Collaboratively writing a song cycle with her partner Bela Fleck inspired Abigail to expand her understanding of song form from a 3-5 minute burst of emotion or story into an epic unfolding of a heart-felt theme over an extended period. In this class Abigail will share her process of creating a song cycle and you will have a chance to select your own theme and develop a musical and lyrical foundation for your own song cycle within a group learning experience. No music or singing experience necessary (Abigail doesn’t read music notation in case that helps you feel more at ease).

About the Instructor

If American old-time music is about taking earlier, simpler ways of life and music-making as one’s model, Abigail Washburn has proven herself to be a bracing revelation to that tradition. She — a singing, songwriting, Illinois-born, Nashville-based clawhammer banjo player — is every bit as interested in the present and the future as she is in the past, and every bit as attuned to the global as she is to the local. Abigail pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody’s ever heard before.
