This all levels class will have a little something for everyone. We’ll take a thoughtful look at how to play in stringbands without a drummer with a focus on southern square-dance music and roots blues and jug band styles. We’ll do a lot of hands on playing with various guests throughout the week and we’ll learn techniques for great tone, solid timekeeping, and creative interplay in ensemble settings. All levels welcome, please bring an upright acoustic bass and be ready to learn by ear, there will not be any notation or tab
Instructor Bio
Originally from Madison, Virginia, Joebass discovered old-time music through 78 rpm records which he began collecting at age 6. Eventually he traveled to Brooklyn, NY, and spent a decade playing music fulltime throughout the US and internationally, concluding with over two dozen shows on the 2009 Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson tour. He now lives back in Virginia where he runs Studio 808A, a “band and breakfast” recording studio that specializes in traditional music. He has taught in the JAM program (Junior Appalachian Musicians), Music Lab, the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood concert series as well as festivals around the world. When he’s not in the studio, you might catch him playing with with the Blue Ridge Broadcasters, The Bipeds, The Bucking Mules, The New Smokey Valley Boys, Jesse and Emily or Vevlo Eel. Joebass now resides in Floyd, VA and Brooklyn, NY.

Hi Joe! Let me know how the bass program is working out for week 3. Thanks!
Hi Joe, will your class be electric bass-friendly?
Hi Joe, I’m coming from California and can’t bring my bass. Seth has been searching without luck so far for a bass for me to borrow or rent in week 3. Appreciate any help with this.
I live in Floyd Virginia and I have an extra bass. (Joe knows me) I don’t think I’m coming to Augusta (maybe) so you would have to figure out a way to get it from me. Maybe somebody from around here could take it up? I will be at Clifftop the following week and I could get it home from there. Any ideas? Neal@swva. net 540-285-0818
Neal, you’re a dear! I’m flying into Pittsburgh and on a tight schedule, but I will be in touch by email to see if we can work something out. Thanks so much, Ann
